Redmi 12 Detailed Features:

Design

The new Redmi 12 has one of the largest screens in its class, at 6.79 inches, and the basic model’s storage has been increased to 128GB. That’s twice as much as the Redmi 10. The Redmi 12 also replaces the plastic back panel with a glass one, has a cleaner new look, and has IP53 certification for protection against splashes and dust.

Display

The 6.79-inch IPS LCD screen on the Redmi 12 has a 1080 x 2460 resolution and a 90Hz refresh rate. It’s a significant increase from the Redmi 10’s 6.5-inch display. Although we didn’t anticipate sophisticated HDR-related features at this price point, there aren’t any.

The screen peaks at 540 nits, which is really close to the 550 nits marketed and there is no brightness boost in auto mode. You will also not find a proper ambient light sensor, so we assume the brightness control relies on the front-facing camera, which is an energy-consuming and unreliable way to control brightness. The contrast is perfect at 1:1507.

Camera

In comparison to the Redmi 10, the camera hasn’t changed much. You get one less component, but that’s the 2MP depth sensor, which wasn’t very useful. The basic 50MP primary sensor is still included, along with a big f/1.8 aperture. A standard 8MP ultrawide camera joins the fray with an alleged 120-degree field of view and an f/2.2 aperture. A 2MP macro camera is the third device. Another 8MP camera with an f/2.1 aperture is present on the front.

The regular modes are still organized in a carousel arrangement in the default Camera app. In general, there aren’t many modes, thus all of them fit on the main screen. The extra settings that were previously concealed in a pop-up menu are now accessible.

It shows near the shutter button for simpler clicking and opens up when you press the arrow. To some extent, we enjoy the update, but we don’t like that you have to access a different menu in order to turn HDR on and off.

The Redmi 12 and Redmi 10 capture different daytime images despite having identical hardware. Xiaomi worked hard to improve the picture processing, and it paid off. The daytime samples are reliable and virtually all of the Redmi 10’s flaws are fixed.

Performance

The MediaTek Helio G88 is the Helio G85’s upgrade,  but it’s still a rather old SoC released back in Q3 2021. Based on a 12nm manufacturing technique, it wasn’t cutting edge even back then, which doesn’t bode well for 2023.

We understand that the Redmi 12 is a very inexpensive phone, but even if it meant raising the price by KES. 5000 or KES. 10,000, an update to a more efficient silicon would have been greatly appreciated. But for what you are paying expect a good phone. The Helio G88 can also support 90Hz at 1080p+ and can work with 64MP main cameras instead of 48MP.

Software

The most recent MIUI version, version 14, based on Android 13, is used with the Redmi 12. The OEM promises two significant upgrades for the Redmi 12, so you may anticipate Android 14 and Android 15 in contrast to the Redmi 10, which is locked on Android 11 with MIUI 12.5. Xiaomi will also provide security upgrades till June 2027 for the new Redmi 12.

Battery

Battery life is excellent as would be expected because the Redmi 12 is powered by a 5,000 mAh battery and the low-power Helio G88 SoC. However, compared to the Redmi 10, the total endurance score is really a little lower. We discover several important details when we go past the total score of 117h. Nokia C22, Vivo Y22, and Nokia C32 have a similar battery.

Charging

For a phone in this price range, the Redmi 12’s 18W charging over Power Delivery support is about what you’d anticipate. The bad news is that just a cable is included in the package with the handset and that it does not come with the proper charger. The good news is that 18W chargers, including those that are Power Delivery certified, are widely available.
